See, I told you I'd be back! This week, I thought I'd take a break from life updates and business talk to chat about one of my favorite things in this life: music. Now, you may be thinking, "Yeah yeah, everyone loves music, whatever." I used to think that way too, but I've met people who really aren't music listeners. They say they can take it or leave it and could care less about what their ears are hearing. And I think that is totally weird.
You see, I grew up with my parents playing all kinds of music, most of it coming from my dad. While I do remember my mom blasting Kenny G throughout our house on any given day of the week, Dad was constantly bobbing his head to Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burning Spear and Lucky Dube. On Saturday and Sunday mornings I would wake up to Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing droozy sounds through our stereo and Dad cooking a delicious breakfast. Much to his dismay, I requested Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" for my 8th birthday and would plug my ears and whine at the sound of anything resembling a saxophone and demand it be changed to something like Backstreet Boys or Christina Aguilera. Luckily, I only went through this phase until about high school which is when I discovered that there was music beyond what was being played on our Top 20 radio stations. I went through a quick Something Corporate and Taking Back Sunday phase (yeah...), then transitioned to Dashboard Confessional and similar artists, then by the time senior year of high school and the beginning of college rolled around, I was jamming to all kinds of different sounds that I still listen to today.
As these tastes grew and developed, I enjoyed sharing music with friends. My friend Lauren and I sent each other mix CDs multiple times a semester throughout college and have kept it going post-grad. I thought I'd do something similar with my blog and start making music posts a regular thing-- a sampling of what I'm listening to and enjoying. Some I've just recently discovered, and others I've been enjoying for years, but hopefully most will end up on your next playlist. It's just as good as lending your favorite book to a friend or watching your favorite movie for the 162nd time with someone who enjoys it just as much as you do.
(TIP: Hit "pause" before starting the next song)
Hopefully you enjoyed a sampling of my iTunes and are intrigued enough to tune in for the next batch (with a lot less words, I promise). See you next Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
PS. "a few of my favorite things..." is going to be a regular on the blog featuring music, food, movies, fashion and anything else that I'm absolutely loving. Look for the next one in a few weeks!
